Sand Casting Tolerances

Dimensional Tolerances For Sand Castings

The values shown herein represent normal production practice at the most economic level. Greater accuracy involving extra close work or care in production should be specified only when and where necessary since additional costs may be involved. Conversely, more liberal values should be indicated when acceptable, as these tend to keep costs to a minimum. Any variations in these values shall not be binding on the foundry unless accepted in writing.

Note:
If Dimension is made by a core and the associated dimension is:

0”(0) – 6”(152.4) add .015” (.4) to above tolerance.
6”(152.4) – 12”(304.8) add .03” to above tolerance.
12”(304.8) – 18”(457.2) add .045” (1.1) to above tolerance.
18”(457.2) – 24”(609.6)

add .060” (1.5) to above tolerance.

Draft:
A dimension pertaining to a surface requiring draft is measured at one point on that surface only. Draft will increase or decrease such dimensions.

Draft Angles (D):

Height of Draw Draft angle
.125” (3.2) – .250” (6.4) 8° – 15°
.250 (6.4) - .500” (12.7) 3° – 7°
.500” (12.7) – 1.000” (25.4) 2° – 3°
1.000” (25.4) – and up 1° – 2°
